Calacatta Marble
Overview
Calacatta is a white marble from the Apuan Alps near Carrara, in Tuscany, Italy. It is known for a bright, nearly white background and thick, dramatic veins in gray and gold tones. Because it comes from a limited number of quarries, it is rarer and more expensive than standard Carrara marble.
Like all marble, Calacatta is made mostly of calcite. It is softer than granite or quartzite, and acidic liquids such as lemon juice and wine can etch its surface, so it needs sealing and careful use in kitchens.
