Carrara Marble

The marble of Michelangelo

The classic white-gray Italian marble from Tuscany, used for sculpture and architecture since Roman times.

Carrara Marble

Overview

Carrara marble is quarried in the Apuan Alps around the town of Carrara in Tuscany, Italy. It has a white to blue-gray background with soft, feathery gray veining. It has been prized since the time of ancient Rome, and Michelangelo carved his David from a single block of marble quarried in the area.

Today it is one of the most widely used marbles in the world, chosen for floors, bathrooms and wall cladding.
